Washi, the Paper That Outlives Us

The Louvre uses it to repair Leonardo drawings. The British Museum uses it on Egyptian papyrus. Conservators worldwide reach for a paper made in a handful of Japanese mountain villages by people standing in near-freezing water in January. Washi isn't a craft souvenir — it's the most durable paper humans have made, and the reason comes down to a plant, a river, and a technique that has barely changed in 1,300 years.

The Story

Long Fibres, Cold Water Western paper is made from short wood pulp fibres, chemically processed, and it yellows and crumbles within a century. Washi is made from the long inner bark fibres of kōzo (paper mulberry), mitsumata or gampi — fibres that interlock into something closer to a textile than a pulp mat. The bark is boiled, cleaned by hand fibre by fibre in cold river water, and beaten. Cold water is not romance: it keeps the fibres from swelling and inhibits bacteria, which is why the making season is winter.

The Motion That Makes It The defining technique is nagashizuki, in which a mucilage from the tororo-aoi root is added to the vat so the fibre suspension flows slowly. The maker rocks the screen back and forth, layering fibres in crossing directions like a weave. That deliberate rocking — impossible to automate convincingly — is what gives washi its strength in every direction.

Recognized by UNESCO In 2014 UNESCO inscribed three specific traditions on its Intangible Cultural Heritage list: Sekishu-banshi from Shimane, Hon-minoshi from Gifu, and Hosokawa-shi from Saitama. All three require kōzo grown domestically and the full hand process. The listing was, in part, a rescue operation — the number of working households in each had fallen to a handful.

Where It Still Lives in Daily Life Washi isn't only conservation stock. It's shoji screens that diffuse light instead of blocking it, sliding fusuma doors, umbrellas, lanterns, calligraphy paper, and the repair patches on centuries-old temple documents. Once you can recognize the fibre texture, you start seeing it in every traditional building you enter.

Why It Lasts and Machine Paper Does Not The durability is structural. Washi is made from the long bast fibres of the paper mulberry and related plants, which are far longer than the wood pulp fibres in ordinary paper, and they interlock into a sheet with genuine tensile strength. Traditional processing is also close to pH-neutral, so it does not carry the acidity that makes twentieth-century book paper crumble.

The consequence is practical rather than romantic: conservation studios in major museums worldwide use Japanese paper to repair Western documents and paintings, because it is strong, thin, stable and reversible. A material invented for calligraphy is now standard equipment for looking after everything else.

Why the Work Happens in Winter Sheet forming is done in cold water, and there are three reasons. Cold water is more viscous, which helps the fibres distribute evenly across the screen. It suppresses the bacterial activity that would spoil the neri — the plant mucilage that keeps fibres suspended — and it slows drainage enough for the maker to control the sheet.

The season also fits the agricultural year: papermaking was winter work for farming households when the fields were idle. It is genuinely painful work, done with bare hands in near-freezing water, which is worth knowing before you look at the price of a sheet.

What It Was Used For Seeing washi as a specialist art material understates it. It was structural to the Japanese house: shōji screens that filter light, fusuma sliding partitions, and lanterns. It was clothing, umbrellas, fans, kites, string, and in some periods armour lining. A material that could be made locally from a fast-growing shrub did a great many jobs that other cultures used cloth or glass for.

Three regions — Mino in Gifu, Ogawa in Saitama and Misumi in Shimane — hold UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage recognition for the technique, and all three run workshops.

Buying It Hold a sheet up to the light. Genuine hand-made washi shows an irregular crossing structure of visible long fibres and, in a sheet formed by hand, faint lines from the bamboo screen. Machine-made paper labelled washi-style is uniform when backlit, which is exactly what it should not be.

Tips You Can Use Tomorrow
  • 1Hold any sheet to the light before buying. Real washi shows crossing long fibres and screen lines; the imitation is uniform.
  • 2Go in winter if you want to see production. The making season runs roughly November to March and summer visits are to an empty workshop.
  • 3Do a paper-making workshop in Mino, Ogawa or Misumi. All three hold UNESCO recognition and most sessions run about an hour.
  • 4Buy something you will use. Washi was a structural material for screens, lanterns and clothing, not only a surface to write on.
