The Fugan canal was dug in the 1930s to link central Toyama to its port, fell out of use, and the basin at the city end was turned into a park in the 1990s. It is now the place people in Toyama go in the evening: a broad sheet of still water, lawns, a footbridge called the Tenmon-kyo with viewing towers at both ends, and — on a clear day — the Tateyama range standing along the far horizon above the water.

It is also, according to a company competition that the city has never stopped mentioning, the site of the most beautiful Starbucks in the world. That is a marketing story, but the reason it won is real: a glass box on the water's edge facing the canal, and at dusk the whole basin lights up and reflects. Ten minutes on foot from Toyama Station, free, always open, and busy with joggers, families and people eating on the grass.

Minatoirifune-cho, Toyama. About a short walk from the north exit of JR Toyama Station. Free and open at all times. Four free car parks, which fill from the morning at weekends and are often full by early afternoon; the Toyama Prefectural Museum of Art and Design car park alongside is paid, with two hours free for museum visitors.

**Dusk, not daytime.** The park is pleasant in the afternoon and genuinely striking in the half hour after sunset, when the bridge and the buildings light up and the basin goes still. That is when locals come. **Clear winter mornings for the mountains.** The Tateyama range appears above the far end of the canal when the air is clear, which in practice means cold, dry mornings from December to March. Summer haze removes it entirely. **Free parking exists but fills.** Four free lots, busy from the morning at weekends and often full after lunch. Walking the ten minutes from the station avoids the problem. **The art museum is on the same site.** The Prefectural Museum of Art and Design sits at the far end with a rooftop terrace looking back over the canal, which is the best elevated view of the park. **Boats run to the port.** A canal cruise operates along the Fugan to Iwase, the preserved port district, in season. It is a good way to reach Iwase and to see the canal working as a canal.
