Himeji Castle — Japan's Most Beautiful Original Castle
Himeji Castle (姫路城) is Japan's finest surviving feudal castle, nicknamed 'White Heron Castle' (白鷺城) for its brilliant white exterior and graceful silhouette. Built in 1609, the castle survived WWII bombings, earthquakes, and fires, preserving its original wooden construction. The castle is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and National Treasure, representing the pinnacle of Japanese castle architecture.
The castle's defensive design showcases samurai military engineering: confusing maze-like paths, hidden gates, murder holes in walls for dropping stones on attackers, and steep wooden stairs. The six-story main keep provides panoramic views of Himeji City. The surrounding cherry trees (1,000+ trees) create spectacular hanami in early April.
