Kamigare Tea Terraces — location in 岐阜県, Ibigawa

岐阜県 · Ibigawa

35.4772°N, 136.4991°E

Kasuga, in the mountains of western Gifu, has grown tea since the sixteenth century, and at Kamigare the fields climb a slope so steep that from the viewpoint opposite they stack into what looks like terracing on a mountainside in the Andes. Locally it is called the Machu Picchu of Gifu, which is the kind of comparison that is usually an exaggeration and here is not far off.

Getting there is the filter. The last three kilometres are a single-lane town road with real gradient, the free car park holds about fifteen vehicles, and from it the walk to the viewpoint takes about twenty minutes on a path that becomes a mountain trail in places. Villagers direct parking and lend bamboo staffs at the bottom. There is a portable toilet and nothing else.

Kamigare, Kasuga, Ibigawa, Ibi District. About 1 hour by car from Ogaki IC on the Meishin Expressway or 1 hour from Nagoya IC; the final 3 km is a single-lane town road with steep gradient. Free car park for about 15 vehicles, with a portable toilet and free bamboo walking staffs. The viewpoint is about a short walk from the car park on a path that is partly a mountain trail — proper footwear is needed. By public transport, take the Yoro Railway from Ogaki to Ibi, then a bus to Miyanoshita, then about 2 km and an hour on foot.

インサイダーガイド

**Wear proper shoes.** The walk up is a footpath in places and a mountain trail in others. The free bamboo staffs at the car park exist for a reason. **Fifteen parking spaces.** On fine weekends there is a wait, and there is nowhere else to leave a car. Going early is the only strategy. **The last 3 km is single-lane.** Steep, narrow and with limited passing. If that is a problem, this is not a trip to make. **Late April to early May for the flush.** The new leaf is when the terraces are brightest green and when picking happens. Winter is bare. **Public transport takes most of a day.** Train, bus and then an hour's walk. Almost everyone drives, and that is the honest recommendation.
