Kinojo sits on a 397-metre ridge above the Kibi plain and is an ancient mountain fortress of a type built in western Japan in the seventh century, after the defeat at Hakusukinoe, when an invasion from the continent looked possible. A rampart of earth and stone runs 2.8 kilometres around the summit with four gates, water gates and a stretch of restored wall, and the whole thing was essentially unknown until archaeological work from the 1970s established what it was.

No document from the period mentions it. What does survive is the local story that this was the fortress of Ura, the ogre defeated by Kibitsuhiko, which is the legend the Momotaro tale grew out of — so the site sits at the point where a genuine seventh-century fortification and Japan's most famous folk tale meet. The circuit walk gives the Seto Inland Sea on a clear day.

Okusaka, Soja City. By car from Soja Station; the final 3 km from Sunagawa Park to the visitor centre car park is narrow. The site itself is free and always accessible. The full circuit is about 4 km and takes roughly 90 minutes; the summit is about 600 m from the car park.

**The restored west gate is the photograph.** Timber and stone rebuilt on the excavated footprint, standing on the lip of the ridge with the Kibi plain below. It is from the car park if you do nothing else. **The full circuit is 4 km on a mountain ridge.** Roughly 90 minutes, uneven in sections, and genuinely worth it — the rampart, the water gates and the corner turrets only make sense walked. **No historical record names it.** Everything known comes from excavation. The only story attached is the Ura legend, which is why the site is folded into the Momotaro Japan Heritage designation. **The access road is narrow for 3 km.** Single track in places with passing spots. Not a road to take a large vehicle up. **Start at the visitor centre.** It explains what an ancient mountain fortress was for and why several were built along this coast in the same decade, which is the context that makes the walk more than a view.
