Momiji manju (もみじ饅頭, 'maple leaf manju') is Hiroshima and Miyajima's iconic confection — small, maple leaf-shaped cakes with soft castella sponge exterior and sweet fillings, traditionally red bean paste (anko) but now available in custard cream, chocolate, matcha, cheese, and seasonal variations. The sweet was invented in the Meiji era (1906) on Miyajima Island, inspired by the island's famous autumn maple foliage (momiji), and quickly became the region's representative omiyage (souvenir). Freshly baked momiji manju, with a soft, pillowy texture and warm filling, far surpasses pre-packaged versions sold at train stations.

Miyajima's Omotesando shopping street is lined with momiji manju shops, many offering fresh-baked manju visible through storefront windows, and some provide unique variations like deep-fried momiji manju (age-momiji, 揚げもみじ) — battered and fried for a crispy exterior contrasting with molten filling. Major producers include Yamaichi (山一), Fujiya (藤い屋), and Nishikido (にしき堂), each with proprietary recipes and subtle differences in sweetness, batter thickness, and filling ratio. Beyond Miyajima, momiji manju is available throughout Hiroshima at train stations, souvenir shops, and department stores, making it the prefecture's most accessible and beloved sweet — a delicious, portable taste of Hiroshima's culinary identity.

The maple leaf shape is more than decorative — it directly references Momijidani ('maple valley'), the forested ravine near Miyajima's ropeway station famous for its autumn foliage, and older accounts credit a Meiji-era statesman's fondness for a local teahouse's hand-shaped cakes as the origin story that pastry shops later formalized into the mold-pressed confection sold today. Because the manju is baked in individual iron molds not unlike a waffle iron, watching the production line at a Miyajima shop — batter poured, filling dropped in, molds clamped and flipped — has become its own minor spectacle, with large front windows built specifically so pedestrians can watch the process while deciding what to buy. The sweet's popularity has also made it a template: bakeries across Japan now produce regional variations shaped like their own local symbols, but Hiroshima's original maple leaf version remains the standard against which all the others are measured, and returning visitors often say no souvenir feels as unmistakably tied to a single Japanese prefecture as this one does.

インサイダーガイド

**Fresh vs. packaged:** While pre-packaged momiji manju (sold at stations and airports) are convenient and have longer shelf life (2–3 weeks), freshly baked manju from Miyajima shops are texturally superior — softer, warmer, and more aromatic. Yamaichi and Fujiya's flagship stores on Miyajima's Omotesando street bake batches throughout the day (baking times vary, ask staff for 'yakitate' 焼きたて = fresh-baked). Eating a still-warm manju purchased directly from the baker is the ideal experience, showcasing the castella sponge's delicate moisture and the filling's smooth texture. **Age-momiji (fried manju):** Age-momiji (揚げもみじ) is a modern variation (invented ~2000s) where standard momiji manju is coated in tempura-like batter and deep-fried, creating a crispy, golden exterior with hot, gooey filling. It's messy, indulgent, and delicious — essentially a Japanese donut. Sold at specialty stands on Miyajima's Omotesando street (¥180–200 per piece), age-momiji is best eaten immediately while hot. Flavors: standard red bean, custard cream, and chocolate. This is a snack to eat on-site, not a souvenir (it doesn't keep). **Flavor recommendations:** Traditional red bean paste (anko, あんこ) is the baseline — slightly sweet, earthy, and nostalgic. Custard cream (カスタード) is sweeter and richer, appealing to those who find anko too austere. Matcha (抹茶) offers mild bitterness balancing the sponge's sweetness. Cheese (チーズ) is a modern, savory-sweet hybrid (cream cheese filling). Chocolate (チョコ) is universally accessible. For first-timers, buy a mixed box (ミックス) with 3–4 flavors to sample variety. For purists, anko is the authentic, time-honored choice.
