Eikan-do Temple — Autumn Foliage Night Illumination

Eikan-do Temple (永観堂), officially Zenrin-ji, is renowned for its autumn night illuminations (mid-November) when 3,000 maple trees are lit against the darkness, their reflections shimmering in temple ponds. The temple complex sprawls across a hillside with multi-level gardens, a two-story pagoda, and covered walkways connecting buildings at different elevations.

The temple's most famous feature is the 'Looking Back Amida' statue — a Buddha figure with head turned over its shoulder, the only Buddha statue in Japan with this pose. Legend says Amida turned to encourage the monk Eikan who was lagging behind during walking meditation.

**Night illumination strategy:** The autumn night illumination (mid-November, exact dates announced in October) is Kyoto's most spectacular foliage event. The lit maples glowing red against black sky reflected in ponds create dreamlike scenes. Arrive at 17:30 opening for manageable crowds — by 19:00 the temple is packed with slow-moving queues making photography frustrating. Weekday nights see 60% fewer visitors than weekends. **Daytime vs nighttime:** Visiting both daytime and night illumination provides different experiences — daylight shows the temple architecture and garden structure clearly, while night emphasizes color and atmosphere. If choosing one, night illumination is more memorable and photogenic, though daytime is more serene and allows proper appreciation of the temple's art and statuary. **Walking route:** The temple's layout ascends a hillside in stages: lower pond garden → main hall with Looking Back Amida → covered corridors → Tahoto Pagoda at the summit → upper pond garden. The summit provides elevated views over the illuminated maples. The one-way path prevents backtracking; move at the crowd's pace (slow during peak illumination). Budget 60–90 minutes for full circuit.
