The Watarase River narrows abruptly at Omama and cuts a rock channel through the town, and the result is a gorge you reach in five minutes on foot from a railway station. Locally it is called the Yabakei of the Kanto — a comparison to a far more famous gorge in Kyushu — and the walk along it is about 500 metres, from Hanetaki Bridge down to Takatsudo Bridge, on a path cut into the bank above the water.

What makes it worth the stop is the scale and the ease. The rock is folded and scoured into shapes that have collected nicknames over the years, including a boulder everyone calls Gorilla Rock, and the water below runs green and fast. Autumn colour peaks from early to late November and is the reason most people come. Because the gorge is inside a town rather than up a mountain road, it works as a genuine half-hour stop rather than an expedition.

Takatsudo, Omama-cho, Midori. Five minutes on foot from Omama Station on the Watarase Keikoku Railway; roughly by car from Ota-Yabuzuka IC on the Kita-Kanto Expressway. Free parking for 56 vehicles. The riverside path is free and open at all times. Walking route Hanetaki Bridge to Takatsudo Bridge is about 500 metres.

**Do it as a rail stop.** Omama is a station on the Watarase Keikoku Railway, the single-track line that runs up the valley toward Ashio, and the gorge is a five-minute walk from the platform. Getting off between trains, walking the gorge, and catching the next service is a realistic plan and removes the need for a car entirely. **Walk it one way and back.** The path runs about 500 metres between the two bridges. Hanetaki Bridge is the pedestrian span and gives the head-on view down the channel; Takatsudo Bridge gives the view back up it. Doing the round trip is 30–40 minutes at a slow pace. **Autumn is early November, not late.** Colour here typically peaks from the first week of November into the third. That is earlier than the lowland Kanto and it draws weekend crowds to a narrow path — a weekday morning is a completely different experience. **The path has steps and no railing in places.** It is a maintained walkway, not a wilderness trail, but it is cut into a riverbank with drops beside it. Ordinary shoes are fine; flip-flops are not. **Pair it with Kiryu.** Omama is a short hop from Kiryu, so the gorge and the Kiryu Shinmachi weaving district make a natural half-day together without a car.
