Ueno is the least populated municipality in Gunma, deep in the mountains on the Saitama border, and Fujido is the reason to drive there. It is the largest limestone cave in the Kanto region — 2.2 kilometres of passages, of which about 700 metres form the visitor route — and a designated prefectural natural monument. The walk through takes around 40 minutes and passes through a chamber the guides call the Great Hall, where a massive column of stone rises through the space, along with side passages narrow enough to squeeze through.

Getting to the entrance is part of it: the approach runs through a long spiral tunnel bored into the hillside, and the cave sits below the Tenku Kairo, a suspension bridge strung high across the valley. Because Ueno is a genuinely remote village, the site never feels crowded even in summer, and the cave holds a steady cool temperature all year — which locals treat as an August destination rather than a rainy-day one.

665 Kawawa, Ueno Village, Tano District. Car required. Admission ¥800 for junior high school age and above, ¥500 for elementary school children, ¥100 for preschoolers. Open 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM, reduced to 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM in winter. Generally open every day, with occasional closures for weather. Tour route about 700 m, roughly 40 minutes.

**Dress for the cave, not the weather outside.** The interior holds a low, steady temperature all year. In August the gap between the car park and the cave is dramatic, and a light jacket you would never otherwise carry makes the difference between a 40-minute walk and a cold one. **Footwear matters.** The route is stepped, wet in places and unavoidably slippery. There is no way round the stairs, so this is not a step-free site. Shoes with grip; nothing open-toed. **Winter hours are much shorter.** Opening drops to 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM in the cold months. Given how long the drive in is, arriving in the early afternoon in January can mean missing the last entry. **Do the bridge as well.** The Tenku Kairo suspension bridge crosses the valley above the cave and is the other reason people make the trip out here. Ticketing is separate, and doing both is the standard half-day. **The drive is the commitment.** Ueno is remote by Gunma standards — mountain roads, few services, and long gaps between villages. Fill the tank before you turn off the main valley road, and do not plan on finding a shop nearby.
