Hiketa Old Town — location in Kagawa, Higashikagawa

Kagawa · Higashikagawa

34.2280°N, 134.4036°E

Hiketa is at the eastern end of Kagawa, against the Tokushima border, and it grew rich on soy sauce, sake and yellowtail. The main street still has the merchant houses, plaster walls and lattice fronts of that period, and it is quiet in a way that the preserved towns on the tourist circuit are not — people live here and the shops sell to them.

The centre of it is Sanshu Izutsu Yashiki, a merchant compound that brewed soy sauce and sake from the Edo period and is now open as a visitor site with a shop, a restaurant and the original main house. The street is free to walk, the grounds are free, and only the main house charges — ¥300. Hiketa is also where farmed yellowtail began in Japan, and the local dish is a marinated buri rice bowl.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Only the main house charges.** ¥300. The grounds, shop and restaurant are free, which makes this an easy stop even in passing. **Closed Wednesdays.** With a public holiday exception. The street itself is open regardless. **Eat the buri bowl.** Hiketa is where yellowtail farming in Japan started, and the marinated buri donburi is the dish the town is known for. **Walk to Kamebishi.** The soy sauce brewery is three minutes away and is the other reason to come. Together they are the whole trip. **It is not on the tourist circuit.** Which is the point. People live and shop on this street, and it is quiet on a weekday in a way Kotohira never is.
