Hoki Museum — location in Chiba, Chiba City

Chiba · Chiba City

Hoki is the first museum in Japan devoted entirely to realist painting — work so precisely rendered that at a distance it reads as photography and at close range does not. It opened in 2010 in a suburb of Chiba city, holds around 120 works by some forty contemporary Japanese painters, and displays them along five hundred metres of narrow curving corridor across one floor above ground and two below.

The building is the other half. It is a set of long steel tubes cantilevered over a lawn, one of them projecting thirty metres into the air with no visible support, and the galleries inside are deliberately narrow so that you are forced close to the canvases. Realist painting has an uncertain critical reputation and this museum simply ignores that, which is refreshing. It is expensive at ¥2,100 and is unlike anything else in the country.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Get close, because the building makes you.** The galleries are deliberately narrow. Realist work of this kind changes completely between two metres and thirty centimetres, and the corridor width is a curatorial decision. **Go around the outside first.** The cantilevered steel tube projecting into the air over the lawn is the architectural argument and you cannot see it from inside. **Closed Tuesdays.** With a holiday shift to Wednesday. There is little else in this suburb to fall back on. **Half the works rotate every six months.** The main gallery is rehung twice a year, so a second visit is not a repeat. **It is not cheap.** ¥2,100 is high for a museum of this size. It is justified by the fact that no other institution in Japan is doing this, but go in knowing.
