Saga · Karatsu

The Karatsu Kunchi (November 2–4) is listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Fourteen enormous lacquered floats (hikiyama) — each one a different creature or mythological figure, built with artistry indistinguishable from fine furniture — are pulled through the historic streets of Karatsu by teams of men in matching happi coats. The floats were built between 1819 and 1845 and have been maintained by the same neighborhoods ever since. The Hikiyama Exhibition Hall displays all 14 floats year-round.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Float inspection at the hall:** The Hikiyama Exhibition Hall presents the floats at eye level — the lacquer quality and figurine detail (some using real human hair for the decorative figures) are extraordinary at close range. Ask the hall staff for the restoration journal — each float's repair history is documented in meticulous condition reports. **Festival day strategy:** The most dramatic moment is the float descent to Nishinohama Beach on November 3 afternoon — 14 floats assembling on the beach against the sea backdrop. Arrive 1 hour early at the beach pavilion observation point.
