Kitakyushu was Japan's industrial heartland — the Yawata Steel Works (now Nippon Steel) was established here in 1901, making it the birthplace of Japanese heavy industry. The surrounding Eco Town now converts what was once pollution-generating infrastructure into one of Japan's most advanced recycling districts, where visitors can tour facilities that process household appliances, cars, and construction materials through zero-emission processes.

Insider Guide

Premium
**Yawata Steel Works heritage site:** The original 1901 brick furnace building survives as a UNESCO-registered Industrial Heritage site — visible on the Eco Town tour. The engineering scale is extraordinary even for visitors with no interest in steel production. **Night factory view:** The still-operational steel works produces an industrial light spectacle after dark — visible from the Kanmon Bridge observation point. The orange glow against the strait water is an unusual kind of beautiful.
