Nanzoin Temple — Japan's Largest Bronze Reclining Buddha
Deep in the cedar forests of Sasaguri, 20 minutes by train from Hakata, Nanzoin Temple houses a bronze reclining Buddha 41 meters long and 11 meters high — the largest of its kind in the world. The sheer scale is disorienting: you approach along a path and suddenly a foot the size of a minivan appears through the trees. The body, draped in red robes and lying in the parinirvana pose, is visible from 300 meters away once you reach the clearing.
Beyond the main statue, Nanzoin's grounds include 88 stone Buddha images arranged in a loop that recreates the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage in condensed form — completing the circuit takes 90 minutes and passes through mossy forest sections that feel genuinely ancient despite the modern Buddha nearby.
