Zao Snow Monsters (Juhyo) — Frozen Ice Tree Sculptures
At 1,600 meters on Mt. Zao, Siberian wind hits moisture from the Sea of Japan and does something strange to the Maries fir trees: it builds them shells of rime ice and snow until they become 15-meter white creatures standing in ranks across the plateau. By February, you can't even tell there are trees inside. Locals call them juhyo (樹氷, ice trees); everyone else calls them snow monsters, and the name fits—they look like hooded figures or aliens depending on which way the wind carved them. This only happens in a handful of places on Earth where you get the right altitude (1,400-1,700m), the right tree (Maries fir, dense enough to trap moisture), and Siberian winter blasting across warm water. Zao's are the most accessible: the ropeway hauls you up from Zao Onsen in 15 minutes, then you walk boardwalks among the monsters at eye level. Some nights (check the schedule—usually late December through early March, 17:00-21:00) they light the juhyo with colored floods, which is surreal but also tacky depending on your taste. Peak formation is mid-February when the ice layering hits maximum thickness and the shapes get their most dramatic definition.
