Ago Bay (英虞湾) is a deeply indented ria coastline (drowned river valleys creating complex shoreline) dotted with over 60 small islands and famous as the birthplace of cultured pearl farming. In 1893, Mikimoto Kokichi successfully cultivated the world's first spherical pearl in Ago Bay, revolutionizing the pearl industry. Today, the bay's calm waters and numerous pearl farms continue this tradition — oyster rafts float across the bay's protected inlets, producing some of Japan's finest Akoya pearls.

The bay's scenic beauty — pine-covered islands, mirror-calm waters, and pearl farm rafts — creates quintessential Japanese coastal landscape. Observation platforms at Yokoyama Observation Deck (横山展望台) provide panoramic views over the entire bay, especially stunning at sunset when golden light reflects off the water. The bay is part of Ise-Shima National Park and represents traditional Japanese pearl culture alongside natural coastal beauty.

独家私藏情报

**Yokoyama Observation Deck timing:** The observation deck offers Mie's most photographed coastal view — Ago Bay's ria coastline stretching to the horizon with pearl rafts dotting the water. Visit at sunset (year-round) for golden-hour reflections and silhouetted islands. The deck is elevated 140m above sea level, accessed via 10-minute hiking trail from parking area (free). Sunrise is also spectacular but requires very early arrival (5:30–6:30am depending on season). Weekdays offer solitude; weekends see tour groups. **Ago Bay cruise:** Espana Cruise (エスペランサ) offers 50-minute scenic cruises departing Kashikojima Port (¥1,600, 9:30–16:00 hourly). The cruise passes through pearl farms — guides explain cultivation techniques and oyster lifecycle (Japanese narration with English pamphlets). The route visits Ago Bay's inner islands and approaches active pearl rafts where workers harvest oysters. Less touristy than Mikimoto Pearl Island but equally informative regarding pearl culture. **Mikimoto Pearl Island:** Located in Toba (not Ago Bay proper, but same pearl tradition), this museum island showcases pearl cultivation history and includes live ama diver demonstrations (10:30, 13:00, 15:00 daily) where divers retrieve pearl oysters from the sea in traditional white garb. The museum explains grafting techniques and pearl grading. Overpriced but comprehensive introduction to pearl culture. The attached shop sells high-end Mikimoto pearl jewelry (¥50,000–5,000,000).
