Atsumi Onsen is a small hot spring village along the Atsumi River (a tributary of the Mogami River) from Yamagata City. The onsen dates to the early Edo period and developed as a retreat for Yamagata domain samurai and wealthy merchants. The village maintains traditional ryokan atmosphere with eight Japanese inns lining the riverside, willow trees along the walking paths, and the sound of flowing water as constant background.
