The Great Hall of Fukiji is the oldest wooden building in Kyushu and one of three surviving Amida halls in Japan of the kind built to model paradise on earth, the others being the Phoenix Hall at Byodoin in Uji and the Golden Hall at Chusonji in Hiraizumi. It is a National Treasure, put up in the Heian period by the chief priests of Usa Shrine as their clan temple.

Inside, the walls and pillars carry painted scenes of the Pure Land. Nine hundred years of soot and damp have taken most of the colour, but enough survives to read the composition, and a full reconstruction is on display at the prefectural history museum for anyone who wants to see what the room originally did to a visitor. The hall sits in a small cedar grove up a flight of stone steps, with almost nothing built around it.

Tashibu-fuki 2395, Bungotakada City. By car from Bungotakada town centre; no practical public transport. Admission ¥500 adults and high school students, ¥150 elementary and junior high school. Stone steps up to the hall; photography inside is restricted.

**Let your eyes adjust before judging the paintings.** The interior is deliberately dim and the murals are faint. Two or three minutes of standing still is the difference between seeing nothing and seeing the composition. **Autumn is the one busy window.** The ginkgo and maples around the hall turn in mid to late November and the site is lit on some evenings. Outside that, you may have it to yourself. **Three Amida halls in Japan, and this is the least visited by a wide margin.** Byodoin appears on the ten-yen coin and Chusonji is a World Heritage site. This one requires a car and a peninsula. **The reconstruction is in Usa, not here.** The prefectural history museum near Usa Shrine holds a full-colour recreation of the interior, which is the sensible companion visit if the faded originals frustrate you. **Kunisaki is a circuit, not a destination.** Fukiji, Kumano Magaibutsu, Makiodo and Futagoji are within 40 minutes of each other and a car makes the whole set a comfortable day.
