The Kyuragi River valley, between Takeo and Saga City, is one of western Kyushu's most intact examples of the mixed broadleaf forest that historically covered the entire island. The valley floor is particularly notable for its camphor trees (kusunoki) — several estimated at over 1,000 years old, with trunks wider than three adults can encircle. The largest, Okunchi-no-Okusu, stands 27 meters with a circumference of 20 meters and is registered as a National Natural Monument.

Kyuragi Valley, Kyuragi Town, Ogi City. A drive from Saga Station. Walking paths are unmarked but well-used; follow the river upstream from the Okunchi Shrine car park.

**The ancient camphor approach:** The path to Okunchi-no-Okusu begins at the shrine gate and follows the stream for 400m. The tree appears suddenly around a bend — the scale is incomprehensible until you are standing under it. Allow 10 minutes of standing still for your mind to process the size. **Autumn river walking:** October–November, the broadleaf canopy turns yellow-gold and leaf fall creates a carpet on the flat stream beds — shallow enough to walk through (bring waterproof shoes). The combination of clear water, gold leaves, and thousand-year-old tree trunks creates an experience of extreme temporal scale.
