佐渡金银山自1601年持续开采至1989年,388年间共产出78吨黄金与2330吨白银——是全球运作时间最久的贵金属矿山之一。江户时代,佐渡的黄金为德川幕府提供财政支持,一度占日本总体经济产出的20%。矿坑隧道在地底延伸达400公里,横跨多个海拔高度,如今的参观路线行经江户时代手工凿刻的坑道,真人大小的机械人偶重现矿工使用油灯、凿子与人力矿车的传统开采技法。
矿山博物馆展示至今仍留在坑道壁面的真实金矿脉、1600年代的排水系统,以及以水银齐合法从碎矿中分离黄金的精炼工坊。地表矿区则展现由400年露天开采所形成的壮观V形峡谷(道游之割户)——这道深达74公尺的地质伤痕,已成为佐渡最具代表性的地标景致。
