Uchikawa — location in 富山县, Imizu

富山县 · Imizu

Uchikawa is a canal running through the middle of the old port town of Shinminato, and the fishing fleet ties up along both banks right in front of the houses — bows nosed almost into people's doorsteps, nets and floats stacked on the quay, twelve bridges crossing in the space of a couple of kilometres. Locally it gets called the Venice of Japan, which is the sort of claim to be suspicious of, and which in this case is at least pointing at something real: boats and domestic life share the same water.

The town was a stop on the kitamaebune coastal shipping route in the nineteenth century and the money from that built the merchant houses still standing behind the quay. Each of the bridges is architecturally distinct, several are lit at night, and a small sightseeing boat runs the canal from the Kawa-no-Eki. Sunset is the time — the light comes down the water between the moored boats and the whole thing turns orange.

交通信息

Around Chuo-machi, Imizu. By Imizu community bus on the Shinminato-Kosugi line from Kosugi Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway to the Kagurabashi-guchi stop, then a short walk to Kawa-no-Eki Shinminato. Free to walk. The Shinminato sightseeing boat runs a roughly 25-minute loop from Kaiomaru Park via Kawa-no-Eki; Kawa-no-Eki Shinminato has a shop, a café, rental bicycles and a display of the town's festival floats.

**Come for sunset.** The canal runs roughly east–west and the evening light comes straight down it between the moored boats. It is the single best hour here and it is free. **Take the boat one way.** The sightseeing loop from Kaiomaru Park gives the view from the water, which is a different town from the one you see on the quay. About 25 minutes. **Rent a bicycle at the Kawa-no-Eki.** The canal is a couple of kilometres end to end with twelve bridges, and cycling it is quicker than walking without losing the detail. **Look at the bridges individually.** They were deliberately built to different designs, several by named architects, and a number are lit after dark. Treat them as the exhibit rather than as ways to cross. **1 October is the float festival.** The Shinminato Hikiyama floats are pulled through the town; the rest of the year one is on display at the Kawa-no-Eki.
