Moomin Valley Park (ムーミンバレーパーク) is Japan's only theme park dedicated to Tove Jansson's beloved Moomin characters — a 40-hectare lakeside park recreating the Finnish forests and storybook settings from the Moomin novels. Opened in 2019, the park features the blue Moomin House (an exact replica from the stories), interactive exhibitions, character meet-and-greets, live performances, and Nordic-inspired landscapes with birch trees, wooden walkways, and lakefront views.

Unlike high-adrenaline theme parks, Moomin Valley emphasizes gentle exploration, storytelling, and nature immersion. The park's design balances themed areas (Moomin House, Snorkmaiden's theater, Little My's playground) with extensive forest paths where visitors encounter hidden art installations and quiet sitting areas. The adjacent Metsa Village offers Nordic-themed shops and restaurants in a Scandinavian market village setting (free entry area).

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Must-do attractions:** The Moomin House interior tour (¥1,000 additional) is essential — a guided walk through the multi-story blue house with Moomin family rooms, secret passages, and storybook details. Tours in Japanese but visual storytelling transcends language. Book time slot at entrance upon arrival (tours fill by noon on weekends). The Littleosaurus live show (Emma Theater) combines puppetry, music, and flying effects — shows run 3x daily (included in admission). **Best timing for atmosphere:** Arrive at 10:00 opening to experience the forest paths before crowds. Early morning light through birch trees creates the most Nordic atmosphere. Weekdays have 50% fewer visitors than weekends. Autumn (October–November) brings foliage colors matching Finnish fall; winter (December–February) occasionally sees snow creating authentic Nordic landscape. Spring (April–May) offers cherry blossoms unusual for Moomin's northern setting but visually striking. **Photography spots:** The classic shot is the blue Moomin House reflected in Miyazawa Lake — shoot from the lakeside path opposite the house (morning light best, 9:00–11:00). The Hemulen's yellow boat installation provides whimsical foreground element. The birch tree grove near the Lonely Mountains area is most photogenic in autumn or morning mist. Character meet-and-greets occur randomly throughout the day (Moomintroll, Snufkin, Little My) — no fixed schedule but typically 11:00–15:00. **Metsa Village dining:** Skip the in-park restaurants (overpriced, limited options). Exit to free Metsa Village area for superior Nordic-inspired dining: Lagom (smoked salmon, Swedish meatballs, ¥1,500–2,500), Lettu (Finnish pancakes and coffee, ¥800–1,200), or Nordic Square market hall (takeaway salads, sandwiches, ¥600–1,000). Re-entry to park allowed with same-day ticket — get hand stamp at exit.
