At the base of the sacred Mount Zozu and Kotohira-gu Shrine, Konpira Onsen offers rejuvenating hot spring baths that have soothed pilgrims and travelers for centuries. The hot springs draw from deep underground sources, delivering mineral-rich waters known for their healing properties, particularly beneficial for muscle fatigue, joint pain, and skin conditions. The onsen district preserves the atmosphere of traditional pilgrimage towns with historic ryokan inns featuring elegant Japanese architecture, tranquil gardens, and multi-course kaiseki dining showcasing Kagawa's culinary specialties including Sanuki udon, seasonal vegetables, and Seto Inland Sea seafood. The thermal water is classified as alkaline simple onsen with a smooth, silky texture that leaves skin feeling refreshed. Many ryokan feature both indoor and outdoor rotenburo baths, with the outdoor baths offering particularly atmospheric soaking under stars or surrounded by Japanese garden landscapes. Day-use bathing is available at several facilities for those not staying overnight, allowing visitors to experience the onsen culture without extended commitments. The combination of climbing Kotohira-gu's 1,368 steps followed by soaking in therapeutic hot spring waters represents an ideal pairing of physical challenge and relaxing reward.
