Ama show timing: The ama diver demonstrations (10:30, 13:00, 15:00) are the island's main attraction. The 13:00 show has smallest crowds. Divers perform from a floating platform in Toba Bay — they dive 5-8 meters to retrieve oyster shells, surface, and repeat while narration (Japanese) explains ama traditions. The performance is somewhat staged (oysters are pre-placed) but demonstrates authentic diving techniques and traditional ama attire. Photography encouraged. Shows are canceled in rough weather or winter cold.

Pearl Museum highlights: The museum's second floor displays Mikimoto's historic jewelry — pieces created for royalty, celebrities, and international exhibitions. Notable items include the 'Yaguruma' crown (12-layer pearl crown with 3,000+ pearls) and pearl replicas of famous artworks (Liberty Bell, Golden Temple). The museum explains pearl grading standards and how to distinguish real pearls from imitations (rub two pearls together — real pearls feel gritty due to nacre crystals; fakes are smooth).

Shopping strategy: The island boutique sells Mikimoto-branded pearls at full luxury pricing (single pearl necklace ¥200,000+). If seeking affordable pearls, skip the boutique and visit Toba's non-branded pearl shops near the station (¥5,000–30,000 for quality Akoya pearl strands). Mikimoto's premium reflects brand prestige, not necessarily quality superiority. However, Mikimoto guarantees pearl authenticity — useful assurance for major purchases.
