Miyazawa Kenji wrote Night on the Galactic Railroad and a body of poetry and children's stories that has never gone out of print, and he did nearly all of it in Hanamaki while working as an agricultural teacher and soil scientist. He called the imagined country of his work Ihatov, a version of the name Iwate.

The memorial museum stands on a hill above the town and is arranged by the strands of his life rather than chronologically — science, religion, agriculture, art, cosmology — because those strands ran simultaneously. Below it, Dowamura, the Fairy Tale Village, puts his stories into walk-through rooms aimed at children. Admission is ¥350 for each and there is a combined ticket. The museum opens at half past eight and closes only over the New Year.

Group rates for 20 or more. A combined ticket also covering the Hanamaki City Museum and the Nitobe Memorial Museum is available. The Ihatov Center nearby is free and closes on Tuesdays.

Adults coming for the writing should budget most of their time for the museum. **He was a soil scientist.** Teaching agriculture and advising farmers while writing. The museum organises itself around that simultaneity rather than pretending he was only a poet.
