Hosokawa paper has been made in Ogawa and the neighbouring village of Higashi-Chichibu for around 1,300 years, from kozo mulberry bark beaten by hand and lifted on a bamboo screen in cold running water. It went onto the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list in 2014 alongside two other Japanese handmade papers, and the designation covers a technique rather than a product: paper made any other way is not Hosokawa paper even if it looks the same.

The town runs an experience centre where you can make sheets yourself, from preparing the pulp through to lifting and drying, and it is one of very few places that teaches the whole process rather than a token dip. Ogawa also has a sake brewery, a soy sauce maker and a preserved main street, and calls itself the little Kyoto of Musashi.

**Book the session; do not turn up hoping.** Both venues take bookings and the full-process courses at the learning centre fill. **Two venues, two experiences.** The learning centre teaches the process from pulp preparation and is the serious option; the craft hall offers shorter drop-in style sessions alongside displays of Saitama crafts and a shop. **Winter is the traditional season and it is cold.** Paper is made in cold water because it keeps the fibres from spoiling and gives a crisper sheet. January and February are when the real workshops are busiest. **Hosokawa paper is a technique, not a place name any more.** The designation covers the method — kozo bark only, hand beating, bamboo screen, no chemicals — and that is what the UNESCO listing protects. **Ogawa has a preserved main street and a brewery.** Musashi Tsuruma has been brewing here since 1748 and the town's old shopping street is a short walk from the station, which makes a half day out of what would otherwise be one workshop.
