Daruma de Takasaki

Daruma purchasing: The temple grounds and surrounding streets sell daruma dolls in every size (9cm-60cm) and color — red (success, good luck), white (passing exams), gold (wealth), pink (love), purple (health). Traditional red daruma (¥800-2,000 for 12-18cm) are most common. Purchase at temple shops or from artisan workshops (工房見学, kobo kengaku, open to visitors). Watch artisans hand-paint facial features using traditional brushes — the mustache, beard, and eyebrows are stylized in classical patterns.

Eye-painting ritual: When you buy a daruma, both eyes are blank white. Decide on your goal/wish, then paint the left eye black (using a marker or brush provided at temple). Place the daruma in a visible location at home or office as daily reminder. When your goal is achieved (or at year-end), paint the right eye. The completed daruma is either kept as a keepsake or returned to the temple the following January for the burning ritual.

Daruma Festival (Jan 6-7): Shorinzan's annual festival is Takasaki's biggest event — 200,000+ visitors, 300+ daruma vendor stalls, street food, and the evening daruma kuyo (burning ceremony at 18:00). Old daruma dolls from the previous year are collected and burned in a massive bonfire to honor the wishes they embodied. New daruma are purchased for the coming year. The atmosphere is festive — taiko drumming, vendors calling out, and crowds navigating temple grounds. Arrive early (9:00-11:00) to avoid peak congestion.

Takasaki Station shopping: If unable to visit Shorinzan, Takasaki Station has a daruma souvenir section (改札内外, inside and outside ticket gates) selling smaller dolls (¥500-1,500). The station itself features daruma motifs — statues, murals, and decorations celebrating the local craft.
