Takegashima Onsen (竹ヶ島温泉) is a small hot spring resort on Tokushima's southern coast, featuring outdoor baths overlooking the Pacific Ocean. The main public facility, Sea View Takegashima (シーサイド竹ヶ島), offers rotenburo where bathers soak while watching waves crash against coastal rocks. The water is sodium chloride spring (salt water type), slightly salty, said to benefit skin and circulation.

The area is part of Muroto-Anan Kaigan Quasi-National Park, with rocky coastline, clear water, and sea caves accessible by tour boat.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Ocean bathing:** The rotenburo sits on a terrace 20 meters above the ocean, with nothing between bather and horizon but sky and water. The bath is gender-separated, outdoors, with excellent sunset views (17:00–18:00 in summer). The salt content (natural from spring water) leaves skin feeling smooth. Water temperature: 41–42°C. **Glass-bottom boat:** Nearby Takegashima Harbor offers glass-bottom boat tours (グラスボート) through sea caves and along coastal cliffs, viewing tropical fish and coral through the boat's transparent floor. The tour passes under a natural arch (鳥居岩, torii-iwa) and into narrow sea caves with blue-glowing water. Tours run April–October, weather permitting. **Remote coast atmosphere:** Takegashima is far from major tourist routes, giving it a sleepy seaside village vibe. The area sees mainly Japanese domestic tourists and local bathers. Few international visitors make it here — which is the appeal. Combine with Temple #23 Yakuoji (30 min north, see separate entry) for a coastal day trip. **Dining:** Local restaurants (near onsen) serve fresh-caught fish and lobster (伊勢海老, ise-ebi) — this coast is known for spiny lobster fishing. Expect simple teishoku (set meals, ¥1,500–2,500) with sashimi, grilled fish, and miso soup. No English menus, but staff are friendly.
