Tottori produces 50% of Japan's 20th Century pears (nijisseiki nashi), a variety prized for its crisp texture, high water content, and delicate sweetness. The fruit is Japan's finest pear — larger than an apple, with pale yellow-green skin and translucent white flesh that crunches like the best autumn apple but with a lighter, more refined sweetness. The 20th Century Pear Museum in Kurayoshi is the world's only museum dedicated to a single pear variety, featuring cultivation history, cross-section displays, and — most importantly — all-you-can-eat pear tastings in season (August–October).

Beyond the museum, numerous orchards around Tottori City offer pear-picking experiences where visitors climb ladders into the trees and select fruit to eat on the spot or purchase by weight. The orchards also produce pear wines, pear ciders, dried pear chips, and pear jelly — all showcasing the fruit's versatility beyond fresh eating.

Guide d'initié

Premium
**Pear Museum highlights:** The museum's giant pear tree (planted 1904, still producing fruit) grows inside the central atrium — a living monument to the variety's century-long history. The Pear Theater screens a 15-minute documentary (Japanese with English subtitles) on Tottori's pear cultivation and the years of breeding that created the 20th Century variety. The tasting area (free with museum entry, August–October only) offers 3–4 pear varieties to compare — the difference between 20th Century and other types becomes immediately clear. **Orchard recommendations:** Taniguchi Kanko Noen (谷口観光農園) is the most visitor-friendly orchard with English-speaking staff and wheelchair-accessible rows. The 30-minute picking experience (¥1,200) includes a brief tutorial on selecting ripe pears (slight yellow tinge, gentle give when pressed near stem). You can eat unlimited pears while in the orchard — most people manage 2–3 before feeling full. The orchard shop sells pear cider (¥800/bottle) made from blemished fruit — carbonated, lightly sweet, incredibly refreshing. **Peak season timing:** Pears ripen in stages. Early August brings Kosui (early variety, smaller, very sweet). Late August–September is prime 20th Century season when fruit reaches peak sugar content. October offers late varieties like Shinko (larger, firmer). For the classic 20th Century experience, visit September 1–20. **Pear soft-serve:** The museum and most orchards serve 20th Century pear soft-serve ice cream (¥400) — pale green, fruit-forward, with real pear fiber mixed in. It tastes exactly like frozen pear juice and is absurdly refreshing on hot September days. **Purchasing to bring home:** Fresh pears are fragile and difficult to transport internationally. Instead, buy the boxed pear jelly (なしゼリー, ¥1,200 for 6-pack) — each jelly is molded to look like a pear and tastes intensely of the fruit. Available at Tottori Station gift shops and the museum. Shelf-stable for 6 months.
