Best Autumn Foliage Spots in Japan (Fall)

Koyo (紅葉) — autumn leaf viewing — rivals cherry blossoms for natural spectacle. Unlike sakura's 10-day window, autumn color lasts 4-6 weeks as it descends from Hokkaido (September) to Kyushu (December). These 8 spots showcase maple temples, mountain gorges, and historic gardens where autumn's reds, oranges, and yellows create Japan's second tourist season.

How this list was chosen

Autumn colour is the mirror image of the blossom problem, and the list is built differently as a result. Where cherry blossom gives you one narrow national window, autumn gives you a front that moves the other way — starting in the north and at altitude, ending months later in the southwest and at sea level — and lasts, at any single place, considerably longer than sakura does. That changes the selection logic: this list is chosen to be usable across a long season rather than to concentrate on one perfect fortnight.

So entries are picked to spread across both latitude and elevation. Elevation is the variable most travel writing about koyo drops, and it is the one that does the most work: a mountain gorge and the town at its foot can be a fortnight apart, which is why a valley entry and a garden entry in the same region can both be correct answers at different times. The list is built so that whichever weeks in autumn a reader is in Japan, several entries are in season.

Selection also favours places where the colour has something to be seen against. A hillside of maples is beautiful and generic; the same trees around a temple roof, over a gorge, or reflected in a garden pond produce the images that make koyo a distinct thing rather than autumn happening. Entries where the setting does that work rank higher.

Two things this list handles deliberately. Evening illuminations are a major part of autumn viewing at temples and gardens, and they are also the most schedule-dependent element of the season — dates are set annually and are frequently announced late — so entries describe the practice without asserting a date that would be wrong by publication. And the busiest autumn weekends at the famous sites are genuinely difficult; where an entry is best on a weekday or early, it says so.

The known weakness: the northern and high-altitude entries have short usable windows and can be cut off by early snow, and this list cannot tell you which year that will be.
