Kamikochi sits at 1,500 meters in a glacial valley carved between 3,000-meter peaks. The road in closes mid-November through mid-April — snow piles three meters deep and the only way in is on skis. When it reopens, you ride a bus for 90 minutes through mountain tunnels, then step out into air so clean it almost tastes sweet.

The Azusa River runs through the valley, glacier-fed and so clear you can count rocks on the bottom from Kappa Bridge, a wooden suspension bridge that's appeared in a thousand calendar photos. Mount Hotaka rises behind it, snow-covered even in July. Mount Yakedake steams on the opposite side — an active volcano that last erupted in 1915, though it still vents sulfur gas you can smell when the wind shifts.

No cars allowed past the bus terminal. The park service banned private vehicles in 1975 and the difference is tangible — you hear water moving over stones, warblers in the beech trees, your own footsteps on dirt trails. On weekday mornings in June, before the tour buses arrive, you can walk the riverside trail and not see another person for an hour. That kind of solitude doesn't exist in most of Japan.

Trails run everywhere. Flat riverside walks to Myojin Pond (one hour each way, wooden boardwalks through forest). Longer slogs to Tokusawa (11km round-trip, four hours, fewer people the further you go). Multi-day routes up to the mountain huts if you're fit and have gear. The valley acts as a trailhead for serious Alpine climbing, but most visitors stick to the valley floor, and that's enough.

If your schedule forces you into peak season, go on a weekday and start the Myojin Pond trail by 7am. **The Myojin Pond trail is worth the hour each way:** Three kilometers from Kappa Bridge, mostly flat boardwalk through mixed forest. Myojin Pond sits at the end, silent and still, with a small Shinto shrine on an island in the middle. The pond is sacred — locals believe a dragon lives in it. In early morning, mist rises off the water and you might be the only person there. The return trip follows the same route, so it's six kilometers total, two hours if you're not hurrying. **Tokusawa stretches your legs:** Eleven kilometers round-trip, four hours, and you're into proper wilderness. The trail follows the Azusa upstream through beech and birch forest. By the time you reach Tokusawa, most day-hikers have turned back. Bring water and snacks — no vending machines past Kappa Bridge. **Stay overnight if you can swing it:** The day-trippers leave by 4pm when the last buses pull out. After that, the valley empties and you get the place to yourself. Kamikochi Imperial Hotel costs ¥25,000-40,000 per night with meals, Western-style rooms, chandelier in the dining room — old-school Alpine resort aesthetic. Nishi-Itoya is cheaper (¥12,000-18,000), more rustic, Japanese-style tatami rooms. Both book out two to three months ahead for October. Sunrise over Hotaka happens around 5:30am in summer, 6:00am in autumn. Worth setting an alarm for. **You will see wildlife:** Japanese macaques show up regularly, especially near the lodges where they've learned to scavenge. Kamoshika (Japanese serow, looks like a goat-antelope) are common but skittish. Black bears exist but avoid humans — still, pick up a bear bell at the bus terminal (free loan) and clip it to your pack. Ptarmigan live above the treeline if you're climbing higher. In autumn, the stags bellow during rut and you can hear them echoing across the valley at dusk.
