Hirose Kinzo, known as Ekin, was a Tosa painter of the late Edo period who lost his position after an accusation of forgery and spent the rest of his life painting folding screens for village festivals. His subject was kabuki, and specifically its most violent moments — decapitations, suicides, murders — rendered in a hard red that has been called blood red since. Twenty-three of these screens survive in the small town of Akaoka.

The museum built to hold them is deliberately dark. It reproduces the conditions of the summer festival at which the screens are traditionally shown outdoors after nightfall by candlelight, when the red flares and the figures move as the flame does. You can hear the sea from inside. It is an unusually well-made small museum about a genuinely strange body of work, and it costs ¥550.

インサイダーガイド

**The dark is deliberate.** The screens were made to be seen by candlelight at a night festival, and the gallery reproduces that. Give your eyes a minute rather than assuming the lighting has failed. **Know what you are looking at.** These are the climactic scenes of kabuki plays — killings, mostly — painted for village festivals by a disgraced professional. It is not decorative art and it is not intended to be pleasant. **The festival is in July.** The Ekin Matsuri shows the screens outdoors by candlelight in front of the town's houses, which is the original context and worth timing for. **Reachable by rail.** Akaoka is on the Gomen-Nahari line from Kochi, and the museum is a short walk from the platform. **Closed Mondays.** With a holiday shift. Akaoka is a small town with limited alternatives.
