Hagi is one of Japan's most intact Edo-period castle towns, where samurai estates, white-walled warehouses, and earthen fortifications remain frozen in the 1860s — the twilight years of the Tokugawa Shogunate. The Horiuchi and Jokamachi districts preserve over 350 years of urban planning: samurai lived near the castle in high-walled compounds, merchants occupied the outer town, and temples formed a defensive ring. In 2015, Hagi's five historic sites were inscribed as UNESCO World Heritage under 'Sites of Japan's Meiji Industrial Revolution,' recognizing the city as the birthplace of key figures who overthrew the shogunate and modernized Japan.

Walking Hagi feels like time travel. The Asa Mori Samurai District features narrow lanes bordered by namako walls (white mortar on black tiles) and summer citrus trees overhanging from private gardens — a scent unique to Hagi. The castle ruins (Shizuki Park) overlook the Sea of Japan, where stone foundations mark where the keep stood before dismantling in 1874.
