Little knownBarely documented in English. This is the kind of place the site exists for.

Kanpuzan is a lava dome at the neck of the Oga peninsula, 355 metres high and covered entirely in grass — no trees, just a smooth green cone that looks like it has been mown. On top is a tower whose fourth floor rotates, completing a turn in about thirteen minutes, so that you sit still and the view moves: the peninsula, the Sea of Japan, the Ogata polder where Japan's second-largest lake used to be, and the Dewa mountains.

The grass is not natural — it has been maintained by burning for centuries for pasture — and walking the dome is as much of the attraction as the tower. The observatory opens from mid-March to early December and closes for the winter, which given that this is a bare hill in a snow region on the Sea of Japan is not surprising. Admission is ¥550.

インサイダーガイド

**Thirteen minutes per rotation.** Sit in one seat and the whole panorama comes round. Give it a full turn rather than walking about. **Closed mid-December to early March.** A bare grass dome on the Sea of Japan coast in winter is not a viewing platform. **Walk on the dome.** The grass slopes are open and walkable and the pasture is maintained by burning, which is why there are no trees. The walk is as good as the tower. **Look for the Ogata polder.** The flat land to the north-east was Lake Hachirogata, Japan's second-largest, until it was drained in the 1960s. From up here the scale of that is obvious. **Combine with Nyudozaki.** The cape at the tip of the peninsula is twenty minutes away and the two together cover Oga in a day.
