Karakama Shrine

Karakama Shrine is reached by squeezing through a gap in a rock. The approach climbs a steep flight of stone steps into the hills above Izumo, and at the top the path runs into a boulder split by a crevice roughly forty centimetres wide. There is no way round it. You turn sideways, go through, and the shrine is on the other side.
The deity is Susanoo, and the local legend attaches him to a great rock nearby called the Iwafune, the stone boat, said to be the vessel he arrived in when he brought forestry and ironworking techniques from Silla — which ties this small shrine to the iron-sand industry that shaped inland Izumo. It is about 800 metres uphill from the nearest parking, on stone steps that are slick with moss and water in any damp weather. Very few foreign visitors have heard of it, and it is not a place to attempt casually or in the wrong shoes.
What makes the site memorable isn't grandeur but the sheer physical strangeness of the approach — after a steady uphill climb through cedar forest, the path simply stops at a wall of stone with a narrow gap cut through it, and there is a genuine moment of doubt before you realize that gap is the route, not a curiosity beside it. Squeezing through with the rock pressing close on both shoulders, then emerging into a small clearing with a modest shrine building and the forested hillside opening up beyond, has the structure of an initiation rather than a sightseeing stop, and it's easy to understand why a shrine built around a natural passage like this became associated with a deity linked to arrival from across the sea. The lack of any infrastructure — no ticket booth, no signage beyond a weathered marker, no other visitors on most days — only sharpens that sense of having found something the rest of the prefecture has quietly kept to itself.
