Katori Shrine, founded over 2,600 years ago according to shrine records, is one of Japan's three great martial shrines (alongside Kashima and Ise) and the ichinomiya (highest-ranking shrine) of the former Shimosa Province. The shrine is dedicated to Futsunushi-no-Mikoto, a deity of swords, strategy, and martial discipline, making it a pilgrimage site for practitioners of kendo, iaido, and other martial arts.

The shrine complex sits within a dense cedar forest where trees reach heights of 40+ meters, creating a cathedral-like canopy. The forest floor is carpeted with moss and ferns, and the silence is absolute except for bird calls. The main hall, rebuilt in 1700, is a National Important Cultural Property featuring vermillion lacquer and intricate wood carvings of mythological creatures.
