**Staircase vs ropeway:** The 1,159-step stone staircase is the traditional approach — pilgrims historically climbed as act of devotion. The stairs are steep, irregular, and exhausting (equivalent to 50-floor building climb); allow 40 minutes ascending, 25 descending. Benefits: sense of achievement, quieter experience (most tourists take ropeway), stone lanterns and small shrines along route. Ropeway is efficient and provides aerial cliff views. Strategy: ascend via ropeway (fresh for exploring shrine), descend via stairs (easier on knees, less crowded downward). **National Treasure buildings:** The honden (main hall) and haiden (worship hall) are connected by stone-floored corridor (石の間, ishinoma) — this architectural style predates Nikko Toshogu (which Kunozan influenced). The decorative carvings include 500+ individual sculptures: dragons symbolize Ieyasu's power, phoenixes represent rebirth, plum blossoms (Ieyasu's favorite flower) appear throughout. Gold leaf covers 80% of exterior surfaces. Photography is permitted from outside buildings; interior access is restricted to preserve artwork. **Museum highlights:** The shrine museum displays Tokugawa Ieyasu's personal items: European-made telescope (Spain, 1609, first Western telescope in Japan), suits of armor worn in famous battles, sword collection (National Treasure katana), and letters in Ieyasu's handwriting. The museum provides context for Ieyasu's role ending the Sengoku Period and establishing 250 years of peace. English explanations are limited but artifact quality is exceptional.
