Morioka Castle (盛岡城跡公園, now Iwate Park) was built in the early 17th century by the Nanbu clan, who ruled the Morioka Domain for 260 years during the Edo period. The castle buildings were demolished after the Meiji Restoration (1874), but the impressive stone walls remain intact — some of the finest examples of Edo-period castle masonry in northern Japan. The walls rise 8–10 meters, constructed from massive granite blocks fitted without mortar. The ruins occupy a hill overlooking the confluence of three rivers (Kitakami, Nakatsu, Shizukuishi), providing natural defense. Today the grounds are a public park popular for cherry blossom viewing (400+ trees bloom late April), autumn foliage (November), and summer festivals. The stonework includes steep staircases, curved walls, and corner constructions that demonstrate advanced engineering. Information boards explain the original castle layout and Nanbu clan history.

The stone walls are the primary attraction — walk the perimeter to appreciate the scale and craftsmanship. The best viewpoint is from the top tier, offering views of modern Morioka and the surrounding mountains. Cherry blossom season (late April) draws large crowds; visit early morning for photos without people. Autumn foliage (early November) colors the maples red and yellow against the gray stone. The park hosts summer festivals including evening events with lanterns. The Nanbu clan ruled from Morioka Castle for the entire Edo period (1633–1868); the domain was relatively wealthy due to iron production and horse breeding. The castle was strategically positioned to control northern Tohoku. After Meiji, the land was converted to public park (1906), preventing urban development and preserving the ruins. Combine with a walk through nearby Morioka's historic merchant district (Zaimoku-cho) where old warehouses have been converted to cafes and shops. The Iwate Museum of History is adjacent to the park, displaying artifacts from the castle era.
