Takaoka has made bronze since 1609 and this is the industry's demonstration piece: a seated Amida sixteen metres high, cast in sections by local foundries over twenty-six years from 1907 and assembled on site at Daibutsuji. Takaoka claims it alongside Nara and Kamakura as one of the three great Buddhas of Japan, a claim contested by several other towns and made with complete confidence here.

What is not contested is the surface. Where the Nara and Kamakura images are ancient and weathered, this one is modern metalwork by people who cast bronze for a living, and the finish on the face and hands is extraordinarily fine — it has been called the most handsome Buddha in Japan, a nickname the city has done nothing to discourage. There is a passage under the plinth with a large painted panel that survived the fire that destroyed the previous wooden statue. It is ten minutes from the station in the middle of town.

Otemachi, Takaoka. About a short walk from Takaoka Station on the Ainokaze Toyama Railway. Free parking for around 8 cars behind the statue and 4 more beside the grounds. Viewing the statue is free; some listings report a ¥500 charge for parts of the temple, so confirm on site.

**Go under the plinth.** A passage below the statue holds a large painted panel rescued from the fire that destroyed the earlier wooden Buddha, along with smaller images. Most visitors photograph the face and leave. **Look at the casting, not the scale.** Sixteen metres is not large by Great Buddha standards. What is unusual is the quality of the metalwork — this was made by a town that casts bronze professionally, and the modelling of the face and hands shows it. **Ten minutes from the station, in the middle of town.** No planning required. It slots between Yamachosuji and Kanayamachi on a walking circuit of Takaoka. **Zuiryuji is the other half.** The National Treasure Zen temple is fifteen minutes away on foot from the station in the other direction, and the two together are the case for a day in Takaoka. **Parking is minimal.** Twelve spaces in total across two small lots. On a busy day, park elsewhere in the city and walk.
