Daitoku-ji (大徳寺) is a sprawling Zen temple complex containing 22 sub-temples, several with exceptional gardens open to the public. The complex represents Rinzai Zen's cultural influence on tea ceremony, garden design, and the arts. Famous tea masters Sen no Rikyu and Kobori Enshu were associated with Daitoku-ji, and the temple houses National Treasure tea rooms.

Notable sub-temples: Daisen-in (karesansui rock garden representing the journey of life), Koto-in (maple-lined approach and bamboo garden), Zuiho-in (modern Christian-inspired rock garden), and Ryogen-in (Japan's smallest rock garden). Each sub-temple requires separate admission but visiting multiple in sequence provides comprehensive Zen aesthetics education.

인사이더 가이드

**Multi-temple route:** Recommended circuit (2.5 hours): Daisen-in (greatest karesansui garden, ¥600, 30 min) → Koto-in (most beautiful approach, ¥400, 30 min) → Zuiho-in (unique modern design, ¥500, 30 min) → Ryogen-in (contrast of intimate vs expansive, ¥350, 20 min). The complex grounds are free to walk; pay only when entering individual temples. Early morning (9:00–10:30) sees minimal crowds allowing contemplative viewing. **Daisen-in rock garden:** The garden (1509) by painter Soami represents life's journey from mountain stream (upper garden, vertical rocks representing waterfalls and mountains) flowing to the ocean (lower garden, raked gravel representing endless sea). The 'reading' requires understanding karesansui symbolism where rocks are mountains/islands and gravel is water. A guide pamphlet explains the composition, transforming abstract rock placement into narrative. **Koto-in autumn:** Koto-in's maple-lined entrance pathway is Kyoto's most photographed temple approach during autumn (mid-November). The long, narrow path under red maple canopy creates tunnel effect. The temple interior features a serene bamboo and moss garden visible from the main hall's tatami room — space for quiet sitting allowed (rare in Kyoto temples). The autumn season sees 5× normal visitors; visit weekday mornings or outside November for peace.
