Godaido Temple

While the temple interior remains closed except during rare special openings, the exterior and surrounding island offer rich photographic and contemplative experiences at all times. The optimal visiting times are early morning around sunrise when few tourists are present and golden light illuminates the red bridge and vermillion hall against the bay's blue waters. The surrounding Matsushima waterfront area features numerous traditional shops, restaurants, and other temples within easy walking distance. Zuiganji Temple, one of Tohoku's most important Zen temples with stunning interior artwork and rock cave tombs, is located just nearby on foot and should not be missed.
