히코네성(彦根城)은 1603~1622년에 지어진, 에도 시대부터 현존하는 일본 12개 원형 천수각 중 하나다. 이 성은 진짜 목조 건축, 가파른 방어용 계단, 현대적 재건 없는 원형 구조물을 그대로 보존하고 있다. 3층짜리 천수각은 미학적 우아함을 유지하면서도 실용적인 군사 설계를 보여준다.
성 부지에는 겐큐엔 정원(玄宮園)이 있다 — 연못, 다실, 성 조망을 갖춘 전통 다이묘 회유식 정원이다. 원형 성 건축과 정교한 정원의 조합은 완결된 봉건 시대 체험을 만들어낸다.
