Isedotai has four stone circles, which is unique in Japan — every other Jomon circle site has one or two. They sit on a terrace above the Yoneshiro river with a view to the Shirakami mountains, were built about four thousand years ago, and were found in 1992 during construction of a bypass, which was subsequently rerouted around them.

What came out of the ground alongside them is unusual too: hundreds of clay figurines, many with a distinctive smiling face that has become the site's emblem, along with earrings and ritual vessels. It was inscribed with the Jomon Prehistoric Sites in Northern Japan in 2021. The circles are covered over from November to mid-April to protect the stones from frost.

인사이더 가이드

**Closed November to mid-April.** The circles are covered for winter to stop frost damaging the stones. The museum stays open, but the point of coming does not. **Four circles, which is the record.** No other Jomon site in Japan has more than two. Walking between them shows how they relate to each other and to the river terrace. **Free, entirely.** That is unusual for a World Heritage component. **See the smiling figurines.** Hundreds of clay figures came out of this site and the smiling-face type is specific to it. They are in the museum. **The road was moved for it.** A bypass under construction in 1992 hit the site and was rerouted. That is why the terrace is intact.
