Before refrigeration, the mackerel landed at Obama on the Sea of Japan was salted and carried on foot over the mountains to Kyoto — about eighty kilometres, roughly a day and a night, arriving at exactly the right degree of cure. The route is called the Saba Kaido, the mackerel road, and Kumagawa was its principal post town, laid out in 1589 by the lord of Obama.

What survives is a single street about a kilometre long with a stone-lined water channel running down one side, plastered merchant houses, inns and a small museum, designated an Important Preservation District. The channel still runs fast and clear and is used. It is a working village rather than a museum street, quiet, and part of a Japan Heritage designation covering the whole mackerel road and the food culture at either end of it.

Kumagawa, Wakasa, Mikatakaminaka District. From Tsuruga Station change to the Obama Line, get off at Kaminaka Station, then take the JR bus on the Wakae line toward Omi-Imazu to the Wakasa-Kumagawa stop — about 1 hour from Tsuruga in total. By car, from Wakasa-Kaminaka IC on the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway. Free to walk; the Shukuba-kan museum charges separately.

**The water channel is the street.** A fast stone-lined watercourse runs the length of the village and is still used by households. Look at how the crossings, washing steps and side channels work — that is the infrastructure the town was built around. **Eat mackerel.** Grilled saba and heshiko, the fermented version, are the point of the road and are sold in the village. It is not a gimmick; this is where the trade ran. **Walk the whole kilometre.** The street runs about a kilometre and the ends are quieter and less restored than the middle, which is where the museum and the shops are. **It is a Japan Heritage route, not a single site.** The designation covers Obama, the road and Kyoto's Demachi. Doing Kumagawa and then Obama's Sanchomachi in the same day follows the trade in reverse. **Public transport works but is slow.** Obama Line plus a JR bus, about seventy minutes from Tsuruga. Check the return bus before you arrive.
