Lake Shojiko and Lake Motosuko — location in 야마나시현, Fujikawaguchiko

Lake Shojiko (西湖) and Lake Motosuko (本栖湖) are the westernmost of the Fuji Five Lakes, connected by a 2km walking path through forest. Shojiko is the smallest of the five lakes (0.5 km²) and has the quietest atmosphere — almost no development, minimal boat traffic, and dense forest surrounding the entire shoreline. Motosuko is the deepest of the five lakes (138m maximum depth), with exceptionally clear water (visibility up to 12 meters) due to minimal sediment inflow and the lake's volcanic origins.

Motosuko's northwestern shore provides the view that appears on the ¥1,000 yen bill and the older ¥5,000 yen bill — Mt. Fuji's reflection in the lake from a specific angle. The photographer Okada Koyo took the iconic image in the 1980s from a spot now marked with a monument and viewing platform. The lake's cobalt-blue water and Mt. Fuji rising beyond create one of the most perfect compositions in Japanese landscape photography. Both lakes offer kayaking, camping, and hiking with far fewer visitors than Kawaguchiko or Yamanakako.

인사이더 가이드

**¥1,000 bill viewpoint:** The famous Motosuko view is accessed via a 15-minute uphill walk from the Nakanokura parking area to the 'Mt. Fuji Viewpoint' platform. The angle matches the ¥1,000 bill precisely — bring a bill for comparison photos. The viewpoint faces east, making morning light (7:00–9:00) optimal for Fuji visibility and illuminated eastern slopes. Winter (December–February) provides the highest Fuji visibility probability (40–50% of days). **Lake Motosuko cobalt water:** Motosuko's deep blue color results from its extreme depth (138m) and water clarity — sunlight penetrates deep and reflects back as blue wavelengths. The color is most vivid on overcast days when glare is minimized. Kayaking (rentals ¥2,000/hour) allows paddling over the deep sections where the water turns almost navy-blue — a surreal experience above such depth. **Shojiko-Motosuko hiking trail:** A 2km forest trail connects the two lakes via the narrow land strip separating them. The trail passes through mixed forest with minimal elevation change (30 minutes one-way). The path is lightly trafficked — expect solitude even on weekends. Several viewpoints overlook both lakes simultaneously. The trail is well-marked and maintained by the forestry agency. **Camping and stargazing:** Both lakes offer campgrounds with minimal light pollution due to the undeveloped surroundings. Motosuko Camping Ground (¥2,000/tent) provides lakefront sites with direct Fuji views. Clear nights (check weather) offer exceptional stargazing — the Milky Way is visible to the naked eye from May–September. The combination of stars, lake reflection, and Fuji silhouette creates rare astrophotography opportunities (requires wide-angle fast lens and tripod).
