Nioza is the tuff ridge immediately below Usuki Castle, and the castle town was cut into it rather than laid out on it. The result is a knot of narrow stepped lanes running between high stone retaining walls, white plaster storehouses and a dense cluster of temple precincts — eight of them within a few hundred metres, because the domain concentrated its temples here as a defensive belt.

The cut-through beside the former Shinkoji temple, where the lane is channelled between two walls of rock, is the image Usuki uses for itself, and it was named one of Japan's hundred best urban landscapes in 1993. The town is small, undramatic and almost entirely free of shops selling anything to visitors, which is why the lanes read as a place people live rather than a preserved district.

Nioza, Usuki City. About a short walk from Usuki Station. Free and open at all hours. The lanes are stone-paved with steps and slopes and are not step-free. Several temples along the route open their grounds during the day; interiors generally require prior arrangement. Usuki Castle ruins are a five-minute walk away.

**Go after rain.** Wet stone is the standard local advice and it is not sentiment — the tuff paving darkens and the walls take on depth that dry midday light flattens completely. **The Shinkoji cut-through is the shot.** A short lane squeezed between two rock faces near the top of the slope. Signposting is minimal; it is beside the former Shinkoji, uphill from the main approach. **Late February to early March for the doll displays.** Usuki Hina Meguri puts family doll collections in machiya and shops through the town, which is the one period when interiors along these lanes are open. **Usuki is a fugu town without the Shimonoseki prices.** A dozen or so restaurants serve it through winter at rates well below the famous ports. Book ahead; most take dinner reservations only. **Soy sauce and miso breweries still operate here.** Two long-established makers have shopfronts in the old town, and the smell in the lanes on brewing days is part of the visit.
