**Mitsuke-jima Rock and sunrise:** Mitsuke-jima (見付島) on the eastern coast near Suzu is the peninsula's most iconic landmark — a 28-meter conical rock island rising from shallow water, connected to shore by a sandbar at low tide. The rock is most photogenic at sunrise (year-round, but summer 5:00, winter 7:00) when the sun rises directly behind it, creating a silhouette against orange-pink sky. The site has a small parking area and torii gate at the shore. Low tide (check tide tables) allows walking to the rock base. Local legend says the rock was a ship belonging to the deity Noto-hime that turned to stone. Visit during off-season (November–March) for zero crowds and dramatic winter waves crashing around the rock. **Hidden village gems:** Ogi (小木) on the southern tip is a traditional fishing village where men still practice teguri-bune (手漕ぎ舟, tub boats) — round wooden boats rowed in a standing position, used for harvesting seaweed and shellfish in rocky shallows. You can ride a teguri-bune for ¥400 (a short ride, April–October). Sosogi Coast (曽々木海岸) features Ganmon (巌門, a natural rock arch carved by waves) — walk through the tunnel-like arch at low tide. Nafune Coast (名舟) preserves the annual Aenokoto festival (December 5, UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage) where farmers ritually welcome and send off rice field deities. Stopping at 2–3 of these small sites adds cultural depth beyond scenic driving. **Seasonal timing:** Late April–May brings temperate weather and blooming wildflowers on coastal cliffs. Summer (July–August) is warmest but humid with beach crowds. Autumn (September–October) offers clear skies, comfortable temperatures, and autumn festivals in fishing villages. Winter (November–March) showcases rough seas, dramatic waves crashing against rocks, and snow-covered rice terraces — visually spectacular but challenging driving (snow, ice, limited services). Many guesthouses and restaurants close November–March. For first-time visitors, April–May or September–October balances weather, scenery, and accessibility.
