Wajima lacquerware (輪島塗, Wajima-nuri) is Japan's finest lacquerware tradition, practiced for over 1,000 years on the Noto Peninsula. Wajima-nuri is distinguished by its labor-intensive process requiring 20–30 steps over 3–6 months: a wooden base (typically zelkova or cypress) is coated with layers of lacquer (urushi, natural tree sap) mixed with diatomaceous earth powder (jinoko, 地の粉, mined locally), creating exceptional durability. Between each lacquer layer, artisans sand the surface smooth, then apply decorative techniques — maki-e (gold or silver powder), raden (mother-of-pearl inlay), or chinkin (incised gold leaf).

The result is functional art — rice bowls, chopsticks, trays, and ceremonial vessels that withstand daily use for generations while developing deeper luster over time (lacquer improves with age and use). Wajima-nuri is designated a National Traditional Craft. The Wajima Lacquerware Museum (輪島塗会館, Wajima Nuri Kaikan) exhibits masterpieces from different eras, demonstrates production techniques, and sells contemporary works. Workshops throughout Wajima's town center offer tours where you can observe artisans applying lacquer in humidity-controlled rooms (lacquer requires 80%+ humidity to cure properly — Wajima's coastal climate provides ideal conditions).

**Workshop tour experience:** Lacquer workshops are multi-story buildings where different floors handle different production stages — woodturning (first floor), base coating, intermediate lacquer layers, and final decoration (top floor, best light). The top floor's maki-e room is most fascinating — artisans use fine brushes to paint lacquer designs, then sprinkle gold or silver powder onto the wet surface. After curing, the surface is polished to reveal the metal decoration. This single decorative step can take 10–30 hours for complex designs. Photography permitted but flash prohibited (affects artisan concentration). Tours are free but purchasing a small item (¥3,000–10,000) supports the craft and provides a functional souvenir. **Pricing and quality assessment:** Wajima-nuri ranges from ¥3,000 chopsticks to ¥300,000+ masterpiece bowls. Price reflects labor hours — mass-produced items receive 5–10 lacquer layers over 2 weeks, while premium pieces receive 30+ layers over 6 months. Examine lacquerware by feeling weight (lacquer adds surprising heft), observing luster (deep, even shine indicates many layers), and checking interior (high-quality pieces have lacquer inside and out; cheaper pieces lacquer only the exterior). For first-time buyers, sake cups (¥5,000–15,000) or small plates (¥8,000–25,000) offer high quality at accessible prices and pack easily. Bowls and serving trays are more expensive (¥30,000–100,000+) but become heirlooms. **Care and use:** Lacquerware requires gentle care — hand wash with mild soap (no dishwasher or abrasive sponges), dry immediately, and avoid prolonged soaking or extreme temperature changes. Properly cared for, lacquerware lasts 50–100+ years, improving as the lacquer deepens in color and luster. Japanese families pass lacquerware through generations. Using lacquerware daily (rather than storing it for special occasions) maintains the finish — natural oils from hands and food subtly nourish the lacquer. This care ritual connects users to centuries of craft tradition and transforms functional objects into vessels of cultural memory.
