Sanjusangen-do (三十三間堂, 'Hall with 33 Bays') is a 120-meter-long wooden hall containing 1,001 life-size golden statues of Kannon (Goddess of Mercy), arranged in 10 rows on either side of a central seated Kannon. The statues were carved by master sculptors over 100 years (12th–13th centuries), each with slightly different facial expressions and hand positions (mudra).

Legend says if you search carefully among the 1,001 faces, you'll find one resembling someone you know — because Kannon takes all forms to save all beings. The hall also contains 28 guardian deity statues and is the world's longest wooden structure.

**Statue observation strategy:** The 1,001 Kannon statues each hold different implements (bow, lotus, jewel, etc.) and display unique expressions — calm, fierce, compassionate. Viewing from the center aisle looking left or right creates a mesmerizing repetition effect as gold statues recede into darkness. The central seated Kannon (carved 1254) is a National Treasure, larger and more elaborate than the standing figures. **28 guardian deities:** Flanking the Kannon army are 28 guardian deity statues including Fujin (wind god) and Raijin (thunder god) — fierce, dynamic figures contrasting with Kannon's serenity. These are masterworks of Kamakura-period sculpture (13th century), expressing power through exaggerated musculature and dramatic poses. **Archery ceremony:** Every January (Toshiya ceremony), archers compete to shoot arrows the hall's 120-meter length — a tradition dating to the Edo period when samurai tested skills here. The current record is 8,133 consecutive hits. Notches on the hall's ceiling beams are from centuries of arrows hitting the rafters.
