Senshu Park (千秋公園) occupies the site of Kubota Castle (久保田城), the Edo-period stronghold of the Satake clan who ruled Akita domain from 1604-1871. Unlike most Japanese castles, Kubota never had a stone castle keep — only a wooden honmaru (main enclosure) and earthwork fortifications, reflecting the region's scarcity of stone. The honmaru was reconstructed in 1989 as the Osumiyagura tower, offering views over Akita City and the Omono River.

The 20-hectare park is a cherry blossom hotspot with 700+ Somei Yoshino and weeping cherry trees blooming in mid-late April. The blossoms frame the white tower and stone walls, creating postcard-perfect scenes. The park also houses a shrine, pond with lotus flowers (summer), and the Akita City Museum of Red-Brick Folklore (Akarengakan, 赤れんが郷土館), a Meiji-era bank building displaying local crafts and Akita's industrial history. It's a peaceful urban oasis, popular with joggers and families.

인사이더 가이드

**Cherry blossom timing:** Senshu Park's cherry trees bloom in the third-to-fourth week of April, roughly 7-10 days later than Tokyo due to Akita's northern latitude. The peak bloom window is 3-5 days. During this period, Senshu Park hosts evening illuminations (yozakura, 18:00-22:00) with food stalls and temporary seating. Weekdays are significantly less crowded than weekends — aim for late afternoon (16:00-18:00) to capture golden hour light on blossoms and the tower. **Photography spots:** The best composition is from the northern pond, using the tower and cherry trees as background. A 24-70mm lens captures the full scene; 70-200mm isolates tower-and-blossom details. The Osumiyagura tower interior is underwhelming (historical exhibits only), but the top floor offers 360-degree city views — useful for orientation on first visit. **Museum value:** The Akarengakan Red-Brick Museum is worth 30-45 minutes. The building itself (1912, Renaissance Revival architecture) is the main attraction — red brick, arched windows, elegant interior columns. Exhibits include Magewappa (曲げわっぱ, bent cedar lunchboxes, Akita's traditional craft), ukiyo-e prints, and local mining history. The museum cafe serves Akita coffee and sweets in a high-ceilinged former banking hall. **Seasonal visits:** Beyond cherry blossom season, Senshu Park has autumn foliage (early November, red/orange maples along the pathways) and winter snow blanketing (December-February, stark white grounds contrasting with the dark castle tower). Summer (July-August) is green and quiet but humid — best for early morning jogs or evening strolls. **Festival integration:** The Akita Kanto Festival (August 3-6) uses Senshu Park as a daytime competition venue (9:00-15:40). Performers practice and compete with kanto pole-balancing on the park grounds. This is the best time to observe the technique up close without nighttime crowds.
